Half of 2021 gone, just like that. It is a good 6 months filled with good dramas from China and I will only mention those watched and rated 4 out of 5 stars from my personal standpoint. I was expecting more production from Mango TV but you can really tell that iQiyi and Tencent Video level up their game this year.

The Day of Becoming You

Steven Zhang Xincheng caught my attention in Go Ahead even though he was not the main male lead. Pairing up with Liang Jie whom I pay attention to since You Are My Destiny. This pair really convinced me that they are suitable for each other in the drama with their chemistry.

For those who love rom-com, this is definitely one for you. A spin-off with fantasy in it, this is definitely my top choice when you ask me which is the best Chinese (c-drama) I’ve caught so far in 2021. The ending caught me off guard and I kind of like the twist.

iQiyi’s production, The Day of Becoming You 变成你的那一天 is about an accidental switch of souls between a popular idol Jiang Yi and an entertainment reporter Yu Sheng Sheng. Living in another one’s body forced you to see this from his/her perspective and understand the person more. Finally switched back but they are caught in a complicated relationship that no one will believe.

My Heroic Husband

Started watching out of curiosity about how Actor Guo Qi Lin will perform. Love his variety personality and moving to acting is something new (at least to me). This is definitely a fun historical drama that I highly recommend if you love a mix of time zones.

Another iQiyi’s production, My Heroic Husband 赘婿 is about a modern-day scriptwriter who travels back in time, woke up in the body of Ning Yi who is a man to be married as a matrilocal husband to a Nobel cloth merchant, Su Tan Er. By using modern-day business methods and ideas, he grew the business.

Please Feel at Ease, Mr. Ling

Most of them might find it familiar and yes, Rosy Zhao Lusi pairing up with Terry Liu Te is the core reason why I clicked into this drama. Reading through the synopsis, I was expecting something similar to the classic Taiwanese drama The Prince Who Turns into a Frog. But I was so wrong and happy to admit it.

Youku’s production, Please Feel at Ease, Mr. Ling 一不小心捡到爱 is set by scheming businessmen and families of successful empires. The plain Jane Gu An Xi accidentally injure Ling Yue and brought him home to nurse the memory lost man. Turns out, he was faking it to get closer to Gu An Xi who has a hidden identity but both of them fell in love. Will innocent Gu An Xi finds out about this motive and what will she do?

Ni Chang

Watching the drama teaser once will definitely catch your attention. And thanks to the scriptwriter for not making historical drama boring. The character growth of Ni Chang is tremendous and other characters have their own moment to shine.

Youku’s production, Ni Chang 小女霓裳 is a historical romance drama that set in the silk merchant industry back in the days. Xie Family is a silk merchant that was caught up in a conspiracy against them. Xie Xiao Ni became the only survivor and she works hard to get back on her feet in hopes to find the truth that causes her family’s downfall. 

Love Scenery

While watching through it, my mind keeps spinning the same phrase “Just get together already!” Even though this is a pure romance drama, but the story also conveys personal growth and how individuals overcome obstacles.

Co-produced by both Tencent Video and iQiyi, Love Scenery 良辰美景好时光 is a romance story between a popular singer Liang Chen and university student Lu Jing. Lu Jing is an individual with a high IQ and charming exterior. Liang Chen is a celebrated singer that devotes her life to create good music.

My Little Happiness

Another Fair Xing Fei’s drama that I like! This drama is not filled with pink bubbles, it is tastefully balanced with both medical and legal elements. The second couple in the drama is one that I really look forward to more while watching the drama.

Tencent’s production My Little Happiness 我的小确幸 is about the romance between long lost childhood friends, reunited after decades, one is a successful doctor Wen Shao Qing and Cong Rong who inspires to be a good lawyer like her late father.

Moonlight

If you enjoy watching the Korean drama My Romance is a Bonus Book, this might interest you to start as well. But of course, again, I started watching because of the cast lineup. THE9’s Esther Yu Shuxin and rising actor Ryan Ding Yuxi pair up for the first time to create pink bubbles for you.

iQiyi’s production, Moonlight 月光变奏曲 is the story of Chu Li entering her dream company Yuan Yue Publishing House after graduating, not knowing that it is just a beginning of a challenging path. Zhou Chuan is a renowned author who later discovers that Chu Li is his online friend that he trusts and confides in.

Love Unexpected

Unexpectedly enjoying this full-on romantic comedy by Kris Fan Shiqi and Judy Qi Yandi.

Mango TV’s production, Love Unexpected 不可思议的爱情 is a fantasy romance drama between a CEO with alexithymia and his newly hired female bodyguard. One only able to experience physical pain and not emotions, and another only able to feel emotions and not any physical harm.

Go Go Squid 2: DT. Appledog’s Time

The sequel of the popular Chinese drama Go Go Squid, this time around the male lead is Hu Yi Tian and we are zooming into his love story with Appledog playing by Li Yi Tong.

Co-produced by Tencent Video and iQiyi, DT. Applydog’s Time 我的时代,你的时代 is a drama is about unrequited love blooming into a relationship. Wu Bai aka DT has been a fan of Ai Qin aka Appledog who is an e-sport goddess national Robot competition.
