Original network: tvN, TVING

Adapted from the webtoon of the same name, Yumi’s Cells is a drama that look into the complex network of every cells in a human. The story centre around Yumi (Kim Go Eun) who is in her early 30s with a stable office job, single and very day to day life. Everything starts to change when she met Gu Woong (Ahn Bo Hyun).

The Dominating Cell

Every human have their dominating cell, the cell that commands the higher level in terms of ‘controlling’ the mind. For Yumi, her love cell is always her dominating cell, but went into a coma after a heart breaking break up with her ex boyfriend.

Yumi is having a one-sided crush on a junior at work, Ugi (Choi Min Ho) from the sales department is a gentle and handsome young man. Just when love cell is starting to get better, Ugi suggest to match make Yumi and one of his close friend Gu Woong. Of course her heart sank, but Ugi went on to explain himself that he don’t like females.

Awkward first date

Gu Woong is a game developer/ programmer working with his friends, Seo Sae Yi (Park Ji Hyun) and Louis (Joo Jong Hyuk). He is a total nerd with no care of his exterior, not expecting anything from the date that Ugi set him up with.

Gu Woong’s dominating cell is ‘reason’ cell, he has an AI development in his cells’ control system and prefers dealing with zeros and ones. When he met Yumi, it was love at first sight, Woong totally lost control of how to react and the joker cell came out to help. But it was a disaster in Yumi’s eye.

Introducing the cells

This is the cutest and most relatable part of Yumi’s cells is the cells. We have the reason cell, the emotion cell, the hunger cell (which is always the biggest and we all can relate to), fashion cell, cheapskate cell, lust cell, and many many many more.

Sweet romance

Woong is not the typical guy and when Yumi went into her dark, unmotivated times, he gave her hope that she can be happy too. Just like that, they begin a sweet dating period but that sparks jealousy on the so-called friend-only Sae Yi (Park Ji Hyun).

Many cells came out during the dating phase and even held a debate session to talk about if male and female can be friends only. Of course, these scenarios are the process of overthinking and voices in our head.

Revived writer cell

Yumi had many hobbies but the cells are ‘dead’ when the hobby was called off. However, the writer cell came back to life when Yoo Ba Bi Bobby (Park Jin Young) enter her life.

Bobby is an assistant marketing manager in the same company, living in the same neighbourhood as Yumi. He chance upon her post and discover Yumi’s writing talent and offered her a position to the most desirable department in the company, Marketing.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching and look forward to Yumi’s Cells Season 2 where we see Yumi and Bobby’s relationship blossom.
